| Knights win opener ROSS MEMORIAL FIELD - Spotsylvania Baseball kicked off the 2010 campaign with a bang Friday evening, defeating the visiting Washington & Lee Eagles 12-1. Matt Houston and R.W. Payne combined on a five-inning no-hitter to lead the way in a memorable door-opener. Houston was perfect through four, striking out four before giving way to R.W. Payne, who struck out two and walked one in the fifth. The only run scored on a tough play when an errant throw rolled into no-man's land and allowed the runner from first to reach the plate just ahead of the toss from the outfield. The no-hitter was at least the seventh in Spotsylvania Baseball history and the first since Zach Goodwyn's gem in 2008. Trevor Talley opened the scoring when he bumped a long, towering fly-ball out to the leftfield corner. Three additional runs crossed the plate in the first inning, the last when Dylan Wolfrey scored on Zach Tarleton's double to the opposite-field gap. After posting another tally on a wild pitch in the third, the Spotsylvania bats found life again in the fourth. Travis Payne singled then scored on a Houston double the other way. R.W. Payne promptly doubled in Houston with a laser to the centerfield fence and later jogged home following a Tarleton walk. Courtesy runner Alan Lynch also scored on a wild pitch to give the Knights a 9-0 lead after four. R.W. Payne, with four hits in four at-bats, came through for the final time in the bottom of five to put the Knights ahead by ten and seal the deal. Kevin Seay walked, Talley singled to left and, with two down, R.W. laced a 2-2 pitch on a line just right of and over the centerfield fence for a walk-off bomb. The Knights were nearly flawless with the exception of the five-minute span in the fifth, an inning which began with Seay's highlight-film quality sliding grab of a ground ball deep in the hole to his right. In addition to R.W. Payne's night at the plate, Talley finished 2-4 and scored twice, Houston picked up a 2-4 night, Ardiente went 2-3 and reached base in all three plate appearances, while Tarleton drove in three runs and Wolfrey ended with two RBI.
